During this procedure, a needle is placed through the skin and guide wires are placed into the epidural space of the spine and electrical stimulators, known as “leads”, are placed at the level of the spine where the abnormal nerve signals are originating. The number of leads placed is determined by the severity of pain as well as the area where the pain is originating. These leads are connected to a control device that the patient can adjust for maximum pain relief. The control device is also programmable with different settings and strengths and can be turned on or off at the patient’s convenience.
Depending upon the effectiveness of the Spinal Cord Stimulator trial, a permanent implant may be recommended. Spinal Cord Stimulator Trials are often an effective treatment for those suffering chronic pain conditions.
This procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under light sedation or a local anesthetic by the New Jersey Spine Institute’s team of Board Certified Pain Management Physicians. This non-surgical approach uses fluoroscopic guidance to ensure accuracy.
